One thing that really excites me about reading a food blog is that I get to check some recipes that I want to make at home with my family. It is more convenient than buying an expensive cookbook though cookbooks also make an awesome collection. However, in times that you want to cook something and the recipe is nowhere to be found in the cookbook, you can just search the internet and there you have it in no time!

So if you’re a foodie and you want to share your culinary delights with the world, creating a food blog is an awesome way to start. Let me share with you some food blogging tips and other important information before you create your own food blog.

First of all, blogging can be so much fun! Next, you don’t need to be a pro to be able to put up your own food blog. Neither should you take yourself too seriously and worry about what to post on your blog. You can just write to express the love of what you do and share inspiration and learnings with others who are of same interest.

A food blog isn’t necessarily all about recipes and cooking techniques. If you are a globetrotter and have a penchant for tasting traditional food from different parts of the world, you can incorporate in your food blog your travel adventures.

If you are a stay-at-home mom who loves baking and want to sell your baked products, you can also build a food blog where you can talk about what inspired you to craft your latest recipe.

A food blog is also a great tool to unleash the culinary artist in you. It can serve as your portfolio to share your original recipes. Food blogging can also be challenging in your cooking or baking journey because you will be motivated to upgrade your skills.

Socialize in Food Blogging

Food blogging also allows you to meet people who have similar interests as you. You can join communities and groups of food bloggers so you will have people to share stories with. Joining such will help you feel more enthusiastic and determined to pursue this business.

Once your blog is established, you may also benefit from attending a food blogger conference where you will meet fellow bloggers face to face and learn valuable online skills. It gives you a sense of accomplishment that you are learning many new things at the conference as well as from other food bloggers you’ll meet. You can definitely write a post about that experience in your food blog.

Creating a food blog can also teach you valuable lessons about website construction. Though the process of building a blog is somewhat intimidating, the good news is that you don’t need a graphic designer or a web genius to put together your awesome blog. Explore the blogging platform where you want to put up your blog and you can learn about web design and other technical aspects of blogging as you go on.

How to Start Food Blogging

But how do you start a food blog? Creating a blog is not as complicated as it seems. Follow the easy, step-by-step guide on how to build your own blog and you won’t get lost. But before doing so, make sure you already have decided on the following:

Specific topics you want to blog about.

Food is a broad topic, that is why you should be able to find your unique voice if you want your blog to stand out from the rest. As I mentioned earlier, food blogging is not just about posting recipes; other content such as restaurant reviews, cooking tips and tricks, kitchen hacks, seasonal foods, International cuisine, cookbook or market reviews, and many more, can also find a place on a successful blog.

Name for your blog.

A blog name should be something that people will easily remember and reflects your style and personality. Aim for brevity—the name shouldn’t be long and hard to pronounce, but it should be short and descriptive of your specific niche.

Where to put up your blog.

Choose a blogging platform that is easy to use and does not require too many technical skills. Also, select a blogging platform that has a decent content management system (CMS) which offers basic features. This helps in making content on your blog more manageable and visually appealing.

So far, the blogging platform with the most terrific CMS is WordPress. You can check several reviews on why WordPress is by far the most popular and highly recommended blogging platforms, even with beginners.

How to Maintain your Food Blog

Now that you have your blog up and running, the next challenge is how to keep it active and more engaging. In this case, you’ll have to focus on providing regular quality content to your readers. Besides writing articles, it is very important to provide vivid visual content. I recommend that you add great images, videos, and other creative designs in your blog posts. Your audience will be fascinated by the food photography on your blog that is why you’ll need clear illustrations for your recipes.

You should also come up with resourceful ways to publicize your blog. Thus, you’ll need to maintain an active presence on social media sites, such as Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest, to give yourself the best chance of success.

Tips for successful food blogging

So, aside from the aforementioned, here are more tips I can share with you.

Post original contents only.

You don’t want to suffer the consequences of plagiarism, so don’t repost recipes verbatim or grab other bloggers’ photos without permission. If you are thrilled with a recipe and want to try it out, attribute the owner and provide your own photos as well.

Make friends and help each other.

Connect and cultivate friendships with other bloggers who share your interests. Leave thoughtful comments on their blogs, chat with them on social media. You can also promote their content and they will do the same thing for you.

Make yourself available.

Be present and responsive on social media as best you can. Always be tactful and gracious when answering queries or when you comment.

Encourage visitors to follow your blog.

Place links to RSS feed or add opt-in forms for an email subscription. Make your social media page links visible in your blog to encourage follows. You can also add a call to action at the end of your blog posts.

Make it easy to share your content.

Provide social media sharing buttons at the end of each post. When they do share, always show some gratitude by thanking them.

Make it easy to comment on your blog.

This means no CAPTCHAs or required logins. Find a way to let your commenters know that they are appreciated, whether that’s by emailing them privately, responding to their comments publicly or by commenting on their blog posts.

Keep your site design clean and easy to navigate.

Declutter unnecessary content on your blog. Add only important menus on the main menu bar and you can add the others in the footer or sidebar area.

Post on a regular basis.

You can post daily, weekly or monthly, just don’t let your blog look abandoned. Create a schedule that you can commit with.

Use a plugin for a list.

Be they ingredients or steps—you‘ll need to point out there’s a “list” thing behind what you’re doing. In fact, breaking your posts with lists are also essential for readability purposes.

Plugins can enhance the functionality of your blog in a multitude of ways. You can search the web for plugins that are particularly for food blogging.

Learn how to take appetizing photos.

People are much more likely to share your recipes when they are presented alongside appealing photos. If you also love photography, you can very well use your talent in creating mouth-watering snapshots of food. But, you don’t need to be a professional photographer to do so. You can even use your phone to take photos. Just learn the basics of lightning and views and you’re good to go.

So if you are considering building your food blog, now is the right time to do so.

You don’t have to be tech-savvy in order to build a functional one. Moreover, you don’t have to be an exceptional writer in order to build an outstanding blog.

Many successful bloggers started from scratch at one point in their lives. You can learn something about their struggles and success stories while reading their blogs. Follow them on social media and read their blog posts. Observe what they are doing and apply it to your own.

Finally, be patient. Trying to make money from your blog is quite devastating at first, but don’t give up. Focus on producing your best content and building your audience first and the right opportunities will come at the right time.

Good luck to your food blogging journey. Let me know in the comments section if what else do you want to know about this topic. I would love to help 🙂
