“Make money at home, even while spending time with your loved ones”
Becoming a stay at home mother is a choice you can make once you have a baby. However, admit it or not, it is a hard choice, especially for those who had stable jobs long before they became mothers. Working moms also have a hard time taking up that option because some of them need to help their spouses to make both ends meet, while others are single moms who need to work doubly hard to support their children.
Sharing my own story, I once had a promising career that pays well in a corporate world. When I got pregnant with my third child, I decided to quit my job and become a full-time care provider.
To be honest, it was a heartbreaking decision, but I stood by it because I wanted to be able to take care of my family. Being a mom, I also wanted to witness important milestones of my kids and to be them when they need me.
But as they say, reality bites. You realize that you can’t simply rely on financial support from your husband or your family. In my heart, I wanted to reenter the workforce, advance my career and earn money that I can contribute to the family income.
I was hoping there will be new doors of opportunities to be opened up for me. But I didn’t want to go back to the corporate world again.
So it’s definitely a hard stuff. If only mothers can make money at home and still find some quality time to spend with their kids.
The good news is, there are literally dozens of ways in which stay at home moms can make money at their convenience.
I’m sure most of you would also love to try this endeavor because taking care of our families is our topmost priority. We want to spend as much time with our loved ones as necessary and still be able to help our spouses to provide for the family.
It would be quite challenging, and yet fulfilling to be able to do both.
So to my fellow stay-at-home moms, here’s the list of ways to earn extra money while staying at home.
- Run a small business
Putting up a sari-sari store or a carinderia (eatery) business is a great option if your house is geographically located on busy streets. Although this kind of business may require a lot of time and energy to grow it, being able to set it up right in front of your house will still give you some time to monitor your little ones every now and then.
If you don’t have an extra space around your house where you can put up your business, you can still venture into other home-based businesses. Example, If you love cooking and baking, you can sell homemade or made-to-order goodieslike cupcakes, leche flans, and other specialties, which you can sell in your neighborhood or post on social networking sites for your friends to view, like and share.
You can also put up a garage sale (ukay-ukay) if you have a good collection of preloved clothes and other personal stuff. You may post those items on buy and sell online forums and make a good deal on their prices.
- Make money at home by reselling
Perhaps the most common type of home-based business these days is to resell products. All you have to do is find a direct and reliable supplier near your location or find one that ships the items directly to your buyer, which is known as drop shipping. You can post their products on any social networking sites or sell them to your friends. With this kind of business, you may or may not invest any amount. All you have to do is to get orders, send it to your supplier and they will process it for you
3. Turn your creativity into income
If you are naturally gifted with artistic hands, creating different arts and crafts and selling them is perfect for you. You can take art commissions by drawing or painting portraits or landscapes, or you can make greeting cards, paper designs for parties, customized party needs, and many more.
If you love taking pictures of nature and other things, you can actually sell those photos to sites looking to buy digital photos, such as Shutterstock, Getty Images, and Dreamstime. These are absolutely a great way to earn money from your photography passion.
4. Set up a daycare center in your home
If you enjoy teaching and taking care of kids, you might want to start a daycare center where parents can leave their children to you while they are away for a day. This will somehow require an extra space in your home, just enough to accommodate a few children. Aside from the fact that you are taking care of your own child, it is also a good way to make money at home.
- Become a tutor and make money at home
If you are a teacher, either by profession or by heart, you can definitely make money from home by offering tutorial services near your location. You may also try it online as there are many online teaching platforms where you can share your knowledge and expertise with foreign students.
To venture on online teaching, you need to be proficient in English because you will be communicating with foreigners and you must have these online work essentials – a computer, reliable internet, webcam and a headset with noise canceling features.
- Become a Virtual Assistant
Some people I know have decided to quit their office jobs and opted for more flexible virtual jobs. The reason: they hated the traffic. It’s so inconvenient to be traveling to work every day. It also eats your time away from your family, especially if you are required to render work overtime.
The good news is, virtual work setting has become the trend of most businesses today. This means you can basically take on administrative tasks that include writing emails, calling, graphics design, researching, or data entry in the comforts of your home.
There are literally hundreds of VA jobs that are posted on different freelancing platforms. The most popular platforms include Upwork, Onlinejobs.ph, Fiverr, and Freeeup, to name a few. If you are a newbie, it is important to first get acquainted with these platforms, the different types of VA jobs, the tasks, qualifications and other minimum requirements that are needed before you venture on it.
You may need to upgrade your skills and knowledge to be able to land a VA job. You can sign up for free or paid VA training or courses in some websites such as Udemy and Skillshare. Also, it is a good thing to join public forums such as those on Facebook, because you will meet people who are generous enough to share their knowledge, skills, and experiences without any fees!
- Get freelance editorial work
Freelancing has a huge coverage, and you can do freelance work either as a writer, researcher, typist, or transcriptionist.
If you have a knack for writing, you might want to try ghostwriting for someone or do content writing, writing ebooks, copywriting or proofreading. You can find numerous writing jobs in freelancing platforms like Upwork, Freelancer, to name a few, and there are a hundred more legitimate websites that will pay you to write articles.
If you love reading books, make money at home by writing book reviews such as Online Book Club, Publisher’s Weekly and many more. Some of them also give away books as tokens aside from cash.
If you want to broaden your knowledge on many subjects or have a penchant for learning new things, then research work is best suited for you. You may apply to become a research assistant in platforms like Ask Wonder, Upwork or Freelancer.
- Start a blog and monetize it
Many successful bloggers started out with only writing their personal journey in life, but you know what? They earn thousands of dollars just by writing whatever comes to their mind. There is marketing potential in blogging, that’s why many entrepreneurs use blogs to reach their target customers.
Before you start your own blog, you need to know what specific niche you want to focus on. Then decide on your blogging platform. You may opt to register on some free blogging platforms like WordPress, Blogger or Hubpages.
Once set up, you can blog about your experiences and ideas on many subjects that include parenting, travel, fashion, food and many more. When you are just getting started, you don’t expect to earn instantly; you can only start earning when you are able to attract enough traffic. Your blog can likewise generate income through other options like advertising and affiliate products.
Blogging entails a lot of hard work, patience, and creativity. But if you are passionate about it, then by all means, start your personal blog and work your way to inspiring people with your stories and adventures.
